Studio Calico July Kit - Travel Layouts

oh how i excited i was when i saw that the theme for studio calico's july kit was about travel! as i had photos waiting to be scrapped. i am starting with these two layouts which i made by combining FP sweet branch chipboards, pebbles stickers, all about scrapbooking foam alphas, AC alpha chipboards and K & Co Gavin deGraw cut out shapes.

Studio Azul July Kit layouts

here are the first two layouts i made out of studio azul's august kit. it features the basic grey marrakech paper mainly which i cut out and mixed with the other patterned papers and cardstock. i also used BG marrakech cut out stickers on the fail jump shot layout; gold stickles, ranger glossy accents, all about scrapbooking ribbons and metal accents on the cherish your visions layout.

scrap marathon - sept 09 week 1

surprisingly, i've been able to create 8 layouts in 4days the past week. i guess i just got too stressed at work! haha so here goes:

# 1 : sister act - me and my sister in genting highlands theme park. FUN AT THE PEAK!

#2 i believe i'll end ep exactly where i want to be - one of my emo layouts hehe ;p
#3 i'm your ninang - me and julio / august 8, 2009

#4 white water rafting - CDO may 22, 2009

#5 good friends - good 'ol UP friends

Dos Augustos

i took this photo of julio and daddy tuting during their (my grandaparents') 50th wedding anniversary last may 23, 2009. i fell in love with the photo! it was a rare moment and i am so happy that i got to capture that which depicted how daddy is - his love for horses, for nature and life, his intelligence and strong command, and yes - his kind heart, love for family and love for others. the photo says so much, of how he and julio are holding hands and how julio is looking at the subject of daddy's dialogue...

i chose the title ' dos augustos' not only because they are both augusto but because of the joy i see in daddy to be amidst his youngest grandson at 82. not to mention, julio is only the second male grandchild among 14 grandchildren.

Happy???

i've been scraping about family, events and memories the past few months and it felt very rewarding to see that i am able to creatively document such. but it was only yesterday, through this layout that i am slowly, truly able to appreciate the miracle of scrapbooking as a creative outlet. i feel that right now, my life is in a pickle. i have so much ahead of me and yet i'm restrained to 'do all that can be' to be able to dedicate my self, my life to achieving a different height.

journaling:

i only wanted to live good, live well, live right. ironically, that has lead me to forget myself and live for others. can i be happy?

Scrapfest 7 woohoo!!

August 29, 2009 - i got to attend the scrapfest 7 at the makati parks and gardens. it was my first ever! I actually flew in from dipolog for that after several shy responses of 'i'm attending a scrapbooking thing' whenever family asked about my trip! haha but no regrets! heck to what they thought - i had fun!

i got to actually meet the various scrapbooking merchants from whom i get my materials from and sometimes annoyingly prod of my shipment's tracking number ;p they were all really nice plus i got to see a fraction of what they have in their stores! i've never been to a scrapbooking store except hobbes and landes (expensive!) so i truly enjoyed every minute of my browsing / window shopping moment.

i also got to meet scrappin moms' moderators! (they're all so galing!) and all the other scrappers whose blogs i contstantly follow and whose creation, i truly admire.

last, i got to finish a layout using the events' kit with nothing but my non acid free pen that i carry in my bag. thanks to honey y. for she lent me her scissors, self healing mat, etc.
and this is that layout:

Til the next one :)

Once Upon a Time

This was an easy layout to make in the sense that it only uses two patterned papers and cardstock and is just mainly done through paper cutting. But it took a bit of time having to dry the stickles on the borders and thickers and applying glossy and crackle accents after and waiting for these to dry again. Coloring the border flowers on the scalloped, round shaped patterned paper to change it to a shade of maroon from its original yellow green required even more time.

Us with our MOM in our younger years..

Materials:

Patterned paper - webster pages, DCWV cardstock, AC thickers, stickles in cotton condy, glossy accent, fancy pants rub ons

For the Best Dad!

Eversince my parents' separation, my grandfather took the role of being dad to all of us. here's for him, the best dad in the world!

journaling:

The words that a father speaks to his children in the privacy of home are not heard by the world, but as in whispering galleries- they are clearly heard at the end and by posterity - Jean Paul Richter

Scrap That! : August Weekly Challenge - 2

My take on LG Belarmino's sketch below for Scrap that's 2nd week challenge for august. Dedicated this layout for mine, my sister and cousins' christmas memories together as kids.

journaling:

Spending christmas eve at the Urquaiga's gave birth to the tradition of having girls in the family bring the Child Jesus to the altar during midnight mass. This was started by erica, then meka, follwed by Krista and I.

I can still vivdly recall how much fun we had awaiting for mass just eating, chatting, playing pillow and stuffed toy fights and getting terrified by tito doroy's human santa claus.

Materials:

DCWV metallic gold and green cardtsock, stickles in green and gold, soft spoken pre made christmas balls, jolees christmas themed stickers, flowers from rekindled moments, all about scrappbooking craft wire in blue, glossy accent, alpha chipboard, kaiser rhinestones

>> the scrappin moms idol 3 experience <<

when honey, my fellow scrapper (only) in dipolog introduced the idea of joining SMI 3 only a few months into 'real' scrapbooking - it was an outright no! i recall saying, oh my, the ones who join there are hard core hon! but she convinced me some more and said - i promise you'll learn a lot!
i got truly convinced when she said we can scrap together! i was more excited to learn from her than joining SMI3 per se then.

i remember my glee when i passed through the elimination round and even so when i passed through round 1, 2, 3 ... it was then that i truly realized..yeah i am learning a lot. but i knew that in each and every round i didn't give it my best - i didn't stretch too much because at the back of my head, i always just want scrapbooking to be a stress release rather than a source of stress! haha

when i found out i got eliminated in the last round - the last 'til the finals!! i was really sad and happy at the same time!!! sad just because it was sayang! happy because of all that i learned..because i made 7 layouts! and just because i got through the course of everything without getting stressed!!! thanks SMI for allowing me to enjoy lots of 'me time', allowing me to create lots of wonderful pieces to browse through and teaching me lots of techniques that'll help me enjoy this hobby even more!

sharing with all of you now, my SMI 3 layouts!

elimination round: ad interpretation

What caught my attention was the chance to win 100 trips, the enumeration of local sponsors and the showcase of water related activities in the pictures. So I thought of translating to a scrap layout a documentation of the water related activities that i got to experience around the Philippines. And since the theme is summer my choice of colors are bright, sunny, fun! I also got inspired by the hibiscus themed graphics which i thought has a very summery feel :)

Title: Summer Unlimited
Journaling: Mt. Pinatubo (trek and swim)
Dipolog ( speed boating)
Cagayan de Oro ( white water rafting)
Anilao, Batangas (diving)

round 1: paper piecing
we were asked to create a layout using paper piecing

design process:

1. i drew the paper piecing patterns first on a piece of cardboard for easy tracing. i drew the mug, butterfly, hearts and coffee beans but the latter two i just drew instantly on the paper i used for the final lay out.

2. for the mug, i used three coordinating papers and pasted them together at the back and manually stitched two hearts as mug design.after which i inked the edges of each paper piece

3. i just arranged the pictures accordingly and cut out a circle as space for my journaling.

4. i used brown cardstock to make coffee beans paper pieces and used foam tape to stick them to the lay out.

5. applied fancy pants and 7 gypsies rub ons beside the photos and on all corners of the lay out and subsequently arranged all the other paper pieces. to add dimension to the page, i used foam tape on the paper pieces.

6. i used AC thickers and Noteworthy design card for my title.

materials:

fancy pants delight PPS (thoughtful & bubbles), Fancy pants summer soiree (lounging), DCWV plain cardtsock (blue, maroon, yellow, orange), DCWV textured cardtsock (green), DCWV glimmer stack ( silver), 7 gypsies rub ons, Fancy pants rub ons (botanical). staedler .3mm pens, foam tape, UHU glue, DMC thread, Colorbox ink (brown, orange, blue), AC thickers

journaling:

I LOVE COFFEE!! because..
it got me through school
it's the most effective, cheapest enema yet
it gets me excited to go to the office
it feeds my hunger without making me feel fat
it allows me valuable time with my friends

and so day in, day out, coffee will always be with me such that the stain
it leaves my teeth will forever be! :)

round 2: reduce, re use, recycle

applying the 3rs:

reduce: used 1 bo bunny pp, 1 dcwv cardstock

re use: i used the punched out paper from where the large eyelets are placed and used this to form the letters in the word, delight. since these weren't enough to complete the letters, i punched out more circles using the dcwv cardstock and completed the word.

- also used the large eyelet to stamp the circles on the left side of the photo and below the placement of the eyelets for accent

subsequently, i used the part of the cardstock with punched holes as my border

recycle: i painted the plastic container of my pp with acrylic paint and manually sewed to form the 3 flower stems by the photo

materials: bo bunny patterned paper #12 my darling, dcwv cardstock in maroon, large generic eyelets, all bout scrapbooking small eyelets, plastic container of pps, small generic flowers, making memories acrylic paint in green, colorbox ink in chestnut, dmc thread, kaiser pearls in mint green, generic rhinestone, staedler pen in green, stickles in pink, glossy accent

round 3: white space
we were asked to incorporate the concept of white space in our layout

Life in the province can be so routinary that especially at my age, I wonder if this is all there could ever be. But every time I browse through photos I see images of fresh air, all things natural - a quality of life. Easily, I appreciate that all these I enjoy as an everyday moment will be those that will stay on wherever and however I may be for I may not get any of it wherever else. It prompts me to absorb and enjoy home.

materials:

K & co Carolyn Gavin line, dcwv cardstock, colorbox ink, cherry arte rub ons, AC thickers, staedler pens, inkssentials opaque white pen

round 4: let's play
we were asked to alter at a patterned paper and embellishments

- i altered the sassafrass anthem patterned paper by cutting out two of its star/wheel shaped design and alternately cutting out the elements in it with one being the inner stars cut out and the other with the inner borders cut out. i then stuck these in yellow cardstock to create a different design altogether. i mounted one of the stars/wheels to put emphasis on this as central design.

- i altered the buttons on the bicycle wheel and on other parts of the layout by adding green and black rhinestones. i also changed the look of the AC thickers by sticking beads on top of it. i did the same on some parts of the die cuts.

journaling: it's safer, it's wider! it's our non
conventional bike!!!

materials:

sassafrass patterned paper anthem, dcwv cardstock, generic buttonsa and beads, dmc thread, k and co rhinestones, colorbox ink, AC thickers black, basic grey self adhesive die cuts marrakech, marvy uchida pen, offray ribbon, ki memories clear glue

round 5: be a bookworm

round 6: which disney princess are you?

Notes:

as soon as i read the requirements for this week's challenge, i truly stumbled at the thought - so what kind of a princess am i? am i even a princess? i asked my sister and my mom which disney princess i should project to be me in my layout and as they dropped names and reasons, i realized they were just focusing on the technicality of it all - who i should chOose to be able to project a funny, witty, cute layout. that didn't make sense to me because this layout should stand so much more than that! so i gave it days.

while seeing lee's status in facebook that asked the same question that has been stressing me for days, i realized that i can be each one!! i suddenly was able to put sense into my asking myself if i even felt like a princess! i believe that one cannot be a princess if there's no prince that makes her feel like one. all of the disney princesses that i idolized eversince i was young only became so because a prince came as a happy ending. as of now i can only be and feel like a princess up to certain extent. i can never be like the disney princesses - YET! but soon.. when i realize my happy ending with my prince will i be able to identify which story / which princess is fitting to be mine / me. or maybe i'll be my own different princess.. UNTIL then i'll just say, 'SOMEDAY MY PRINCE WILL COME - I BELIEVE!'

Process:

so for this challenge:

- i downloaded and printed in cardstock an image of the disney princesses in a castle as the focus of my layout
- i then cut small photos of my face and stuck it on top of each of the faces of the disney princesses in the image to stand as me in different persons
- applied different embellishments to attain the magical feel that i wanted to appear in my layout

techniques used

- i altered the plain cardstock by painting it with mm glimmer paint in pink, green and blue as grass, background color and sky ( first first-time used technique)
- i sprayed tattered angels and maya road spray ink / glimmer mist in gold and red against white corrugated board as background of the castle and my solo photo emphasized at the bottom of the layout (second first-time technique)
- i heat embossed leaves and flowers at the base of the castle and in the area where my solo photo is positioned ( 3rd first-time technique)

materials used:

DCWV cardstock in pinkish lavender, mm glimmer paint in blue, pink, green, tattered angels glimmer mist in gold, maya road mist in red, white corrugated board, prima flowers, flowers, AAS and MM brads, colorbox ink, embossing powder, AC thickers, generic rhinestone, fancy pants rub ons, K & Co chipboard words, kaiser rhinestones, say it in crystals, all about scrapbooking ribbon

dreamgirls challenge 33: on the wings of love

i made this layout for dreamgirls challenge 33: on the wings of love. the challenge is all about including wings, paint and glitter on your layout. the photo featured here is of my 'wakeboarding experience cum disaster' at lago del sol wakeboard park in manila. as you can see i almost fell flat on my face on the plank if not saved at the last minute by my 'imaginary wings' that lifted me a little higher so i'll land on the water instead. (hahaha)

i used orange paint on the buttons and glitter/rhinestone scrolls and leaves on the flower as accent.

Puppy Love

This is a layout i made of my cousin annika about her love for dogs. i took the photos while she was playing with our puppy one afternoon. i can;t help but laugh each time i look at the rightmost photo that shows how she kissed the puppy on the lips - something she's never scared to do and always does!

july 2009 layouts

this is a spur of the moment layout because as i was conceptualizing my entry for SMI 3 round 6, i realized i absolutley didn't know what to do. instead, i browsed through my envelope-full of photos-to-be-scrapped and decided to make this layout about the fishing boat that my grandfather named after me. this is the only photo we have of it and i'm happy i got to make layout about it :)

one of my bestfriends, tanya and i always had this thing for having the same things!!! in college we bought the same shirts in different colors, the same sandals and what else. so when i learned that we were gonna have the same car model and was gonna pick up mine from the port in her hometown, i didn't pass the opportunity to scrap about this and took photos in matching shirts pa!

this layout speaks for itself - it's of milestones. my 'graduations' hopefully, there's gonna be no more :p

'bata my, bata my' is an identifying joke of my grandparents of me. they say i was a timid child who didn't speak when not spoken to, who keeps quiet at the corner until everybody forgets i was even in the room and sometimes got scared of my own shadow as they jokingly say!

thus, an unforgettable instance was one i loudly uttered from nowhere, 'bata my, bata my' to call on to my grandmother as i saw them going into the car to leave and me getting left behind! the phrase literally meant, mommy ( my grandmother), you're forgetting me (the bata) hehe

and this layout is especially dedicated to that unforgettable moment in my childhood :)

i made this layout for our so called 'saga memories.' saga is the company name of our family's business and as we all have memories of spending so many lazy days there, my childhood is spelled with so much saga in it!

this photo shows my mom with me and my cousins, krystelle and annina. i'm guessing we were just killing time when this was taken.

this one is of my 5 year old cousin rocio. oh my she's something else as you can see!

this is a layout of me and my sister, krista in our younger years. we're 4.5yrs apart

white space ... erase, erase

This is the first layout i made for scrappin moms idol 3, 4th challenge that called for the application of white space in a layout that spoke of everyday moments. i planned on featuring photos of those that provided spark to my everyday living at this phase in my life. thus, i included photos of priceless dipolog sunrise and sunsets, my scrap loot packages the anticipation of which just provides unexplainable excitement (!), my gadgets that allows me to get in touched with friends so far away, my winnie the pooh that accompanies me to sleep etc.

after finishing the layout, i realized that my photos just had way too diferrent colors! in the end, i felt that my color combination was just off!! so i decided to make another layout for SMI :p but nevertheless, i like this layout > it personally means a lot :)

paper piecing take 2

i made a layout doing paper piecing for scrappinmoms idol3 and only realized after finishing the layout i made after which that i did paper piecing yet again!! i was really able to say that Scrappinmoms idol pushes every scrapper to step out of their comfort zones. even if i get eliminated i'd still continue to make the challenges. ain't no better way to learn!

here's that second layout :)

First Kit Set!

just sharing the first five layouts i got to make out of studio azul's june kit, a spoonful of sugar. i think i can manage 2 more with whatever's left from tin's concoction. it's my first time to try the kit membership system and i must say this is more scrapping expense - friendly at the onset.

it also allowed me to set in to a more playful mood as i never got 'stressed' matching paper and looking into all my scrap stash containers for embellishments. every night since 4 nights ago, i just brought tin's ziploc, played with its contents while watching tv and viola! i had a finished layout before dozing off!
